I got the Novell, Microsoft, Cisco, etc... certs over the decades. Many. All now expired.
I'm bored , stressed and restless.

When I first got into IT in the early 90's companies would send you to training. Those Novell, Microsoft, and Cisco classes were and are expensive. Later those companies got wise and started requiring a commitment before sending you to a $2,500 week long class. Even later they just stopped sending you. With the exception of vendor supplied training. Seems they're still willing to send you for a few days of "free" training for a firewall or such. Got most of my certs by reading the books. No shortage of books for every cert.
-
In manufacturing, the company holds the certs. You will not take them with you.
-
I get sent to training. Most is online though. Last job I just did training from home when I didn't have anything else to do. Dell, Lenovo and HP ser5ver, enterprise, client and a ton of Lexmark certificates.
-
One place I worked at spent a pretty penny to get me certified in magnaflux testing. They told me right up front that I would get the training but they would hold the certification and I could not take it with me.
Pricks.
-
That's shitty
-
I could probably send some weekends getting my own certs if wanted.
I used to have msce from Microsoft, but that is way outdated
-
Mine goes back to '97. Same as my Novell MCNE. Most Microsoft certs don't actually expire but they are product version specific and the products "expire". I've probably taken 25 Cisco tests. Those certs do actually expire.

How much would it have cost to take the knowledge you gained and get a new certificate, one that company could not say it paid for and therefor owned?
-
$3500

$3500
Could you have made that money back and more if you could have carried that certification elsewhere?
Seems to me that company just didn't want you leaving after they paid for the certification but I think a better outcome would have been to say you could take the certification with you after a period of time.
-
Seems to me it's up to the company awarding the certification as to how it is assigned but I know nothing about that particular certification.
-
I heard guys say some companies made them sign an agreement to pay the company back for a certain school if they left the company before a certain amount of time.
-
You know I do have to say that I really love this job. It's not stressful, I don't really work a lot of hours, and I'm pretty much left to do what I need to do.

That is the key. I hate micromanagement.

I called Larry - the guy who onboarded me at my last job - to ask about my certs. He said they go with the techs and I should be able to get them. he has a guy right now doing the same thing.
Larry is a friend. We keep in touch and talk pretty often. He was in line to be a lead tech but I got it over him. lol. Now he's a lead tech in a different division. Super great guy.

Some certs are owned by the tech because the certifying association deems it so. NICET stuff, for instance
-
Microsoft and Cisco certs are yours personally.
