Not Iron's crappy DCS thread. ;)

Buddy worked on F4's in Germany for a few years, said the plane leaked hydraulic fluid everywhere
That's not entirely accurate. They leaked hydraulic fluid, oil and fuel everywhere.

The F-104 and F-4 did indeed both use the General Electric J79 engine. The F-104 was the only fighter to carry the M61 cannon, it was also the first (F-104C) of many fighters to carry the M61A1 cannon.

There is a free mod for the Starfighter by VSN. (Germans that have made quite a few mods). It's pretty fun to fly and very fast with excellent acceleration. I took down 4 MiG-21's with a Starfighter. I loaded it with 6 AIM-9's and went out to bully some MiG's.
I did that several times and only once did I not kill all four and that was only because I lost sight of him and couldn't figure where he went. He likely rtb'b and I missed it while I was killing all his friends.
If you like to boom and zoom, this is the Cold War jet for you.
I tried this with the F-106 also and let's just say that I was less than successful in that endeavor. The Delta Dart isn't as fast or nimble as the Super Sabre and has a more sluggish acceleration to boot.

Hey Elfie, check this video out, TONS of F104 footage of weapons test sometime in the 70s I think. You'd know better from your experience in the armed forces. Whichever year - the footage of F104s doing massive damage is fantastic. I grew up around the 104 as prior to 1984 and the RCAF getting the F18 A/B models from America, the RCAF ran the F104s, and had a nuclear "one way" mission with the units while they were stationed in Germany at Baden air base. Good times.

That M61A1 20MM Rotary Cannon sounds wicked as hell. How about the damage it did to that prehistoric-looking helicopter? lol total destruction.
Interesting factoid, the Starfighter spent less than a year on active duty service with the USAF. I'd guess these film clips were shot sometime in the 1955-1958 time frame.

I watched many strike films from Vietnam during training classes in the USAF. Napalm always kinda fascinated me and I'm not sure why because it's a pretty horrific weapon. To this day napalm strikes are my favorite to watch even though intellectually I know people are getting turned into burnt toast.
Maybe the fascination is similar to watching a mushroom cloud form as a result of a nuclear detonation. How the fire spreads during a napalm strike is pretty darn cool looking, so maybe that's it.

I should have kept reading. It was reactivated for the Berlin crisis and again for Vietnam. In Vietnam it flew over 5000 combat missions, many of them BARCAP for early AWACS. USAF initially ordered over 700 of them but cut the order to less than 200.

Same reason the Tora! Tora! Tora! pyro team uses gasoline bombs. There's a lot of ways to make a thump, but the wall of fire is what gets the crowd going.

I witnessed an A-10 demo with ground detonated napalm in the 1980s (basically they simulated the drop, but essentially the same thing). I was about 300m away (about 3 football fields), and basically got a "sunburn" from the radiant flash. You could feel the heat and the burn the very second it detonated. I smelled like jet fuel for days (was perfectly downwind). That was close enough. I can't imagine being hit by that.

Cool stuff coming including the F6F Hellcat, F-4U Corsair and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

What the fuck, still NO A-26 Invader ?!?!

We have provided more information on this in our privacy policy.I've been keeping up with it a little bit. IMO, they really need to focus on bug fixes and theaters. They've got the Hellcat and Corsair, but is there a Pacific Theater on the way, too? They've still got the Sabre and Fagot, but no Korea. They've got the F-4, Mig-19 and 21, and the Super Sabre and Intruder on the way, but no Vietnam with AI units and such?
-
There is a MiG-17 on the way also and if the issues between ED and Razbam ever get sorted out there will be a MiG-23 as well.
I agree that they need to address certain theater issues, like Vietnam, Korea and dubya dubya too. Folks have been asking for a Vietnam map forever and some say we can't get one until there are destructible objects in the game. Don't we already have that? Bomb a fuel tank and it burns. Others say it's an issue with the amount of trees but we have the Kola Peninsula map that has loads of trees.
I think the AI aircraft need to be detuned a bit because I have Tacview files that show AI Fishbeds sustaining 8g turns and not losing speed and, in some cases, accelerating. I have yet to figure out how to beat that and one guy on the ED forums just says "use BFM" but when pressed for specific solutions posts training videos of how to teach wingmen to work together.

Mig 23 is deep in development at Razbam too, or was at least.
Zero is coming as well. As is a full fidelity F15C, which will be good times.
Poor Red team - F16C, F18C, F14, now full fidelity F15C, Typhoon, F35, Tornado is coming too. Mig 29 full fidelity is coming as well, that's my favorite fighter of all time, for some good reasons and a good story about a smoking hot girl in a Mig29 shirt at an air show when I was itty bitty, 18 I think.
