My best memories of the aurora borealis are from when I did receiver air refueling up by the North Pole.
Basically you fly off the tanker as your attitude indicator. But behind the tanker you are seeing the lights swirl and twirl, rise and fall. It’s very vertigo inducing, very spatially disorienting. To the point that at times my brain was telling me we were totally inverted. You just figure you and the tanker are both inverted and hang on. Had to hang on the boom for 60 minutes to get to full tanks. It was a workout, mentally and physically.
Also very cool.
