The buses in my City are amazing, the tickets cover the cost of the service, so its not run to a profit but rather run to keep going, with local goverment oversight.
There is no central bus station, but rather everything goes to the city centre, by chance, long before the invention of the motorcar, the city centre was built with two large roads running down its length (more impressive and more room for horse and cart), that happen to be big enough for two lanes of modern traffic on each.
The large road running down "main street", if you will, past the castle has been limited to cars, trams and taxis. It is to this place almost every bus goes too, and goes out from.
So wherever you are in the city, you just hop on a bus, available on most main roads or busy smaller roads and it takes you to the city centre, and from there you can get anywhere else.
Because UK, the main rail station is also on main street, as are the buses and trams to the airport (airport buses can also be found all over the city).
As buses run all day and night, you can stumble out of your buddys house on the city outskirts at 2AM, get on the next bus going to the city centre, and then get your bus home from there, or catch your train home....or if you have really planned your time poorly, catch your flight.
I live on the outskirts and I have a bus to the city centre every 5-8 minutes or so, a bus to the Airport every 20-30 mins or so, that goes right past my place of work, and a bus to the hospital and further on to one of the retail parks every 20-30 minutes.
It is fortunate, as the roads are somewhat limited in their traffic handling by being older than America.
