Since that mad Aussie fella shot up all those muslims in Christchurch they stripped our right to own semis...you can have 22s but with a max of 10 round mags... all other calibers are 5 round mags.... There are still plenty here... people who didn't hand them back just can't use them openly... many did hand them in though. but our registry was pretty much non existent so who knows how many are still about.
So those cops will have the gun but would have no idea where it came from...
Handguns are different but you have to be a member of a pistol club and do one event every month to keep them...I have no idea whether they even check that shit though... guess they would if you can to their attention.
