The humble guitar pick. Where it all starts!
What pics do you use? When I first started playing in a band, or actually playing guitar as well I think, I always use a thin pick. Thinking that it would be quicker and more nimble. It's actually the exact opposite.
So it wasn't long but I started using medium to heavy pics. For the past couple years I've been using this black pic that came with a piece of gear that I had. I don't even know what gauge it was but it's I would say similar to the Dunlop 88 mm.
Whether it's acoustic or electric I'm almost exclusively using this pic or something that feels just like it.
Diva pics.
So what gauge?
The gauge depends on the string. No nose clippers, so imagine.
Those picks do look nice!
I use the medium gauge pics for everything like I said. Even strumming my acoustic.
My acoustic is a Martin d15. It's got a darker tone to it. Something I didn't like at first but now I just can't believe how great this thing sounds.
But my picking style and strumming style I play pretty aggressively on the acoustic. I like getting a lot of dynamics out of it, so much so that I can't really reproduce things on the electric guitar that I can do on the acoustic. As far as dynamics and sort of a powerful feel. It's way expressive compared to an electric in my opinion. For rhythm.
So I don't play like these nice pretty thin and high-end rhythms on acoustic. I play more hard on it.
But I was just curious what gauge you guys like.
I use the medium Dunlops with a hole in the middle. They're yellow.
So what gauge?
I like the red ones, I think they are 1mm
...blue. Fingers on acoustic 6 strings.
does the hole make it easier to grip
Much.
G'luck chops.
No fucking visors.
Visors are for fucking pussies. Hold your fucking hand in front of your face and squint like a man.
Get this free plug in!
Seriously get that plug in while it's free. That compressor is one that I use on almost everything. It's a great compressor and to get it for free is amazing.
I say I use it on almost everything but I don't use it on like the mix bus or anything like that. I mean individual things like vocals, bass, guitar.
I feel like I had this before. It's subtle but what it does to the whole mix is pretty dramatic. I'll probably be putting this on pretty much everything...
Thanks for the heads up Jeej!

It really is something that makes everything sound better
My LA-610 Mk II preamp has one built into it - and it's hardware. I'll usually track vocals and acoustic with it on.
The next compressor to get (if you don't have it already) is an 1176 compressor. I have the waves version (CLA-76) and also now the UAD version that came with my interface.
the 1176 is also one of the great ones. I often put an 1176 in front of an la-2 . The 1176 is is capable of super fast attacks and release times. it's good for getting peaks and transients dialed back before it hits the la2.
The 1176 is another must have. It's great on crushing drum sounds, snares, kicks, room mics.
The things that make a mix sound great are basically kind of simple. A decent recording, EQ and compression.
These compressors are used just as much - if not more- for their sound and character as they are for actually compressing the signal. A lot of compressors will compress a signal just fine, but these things also add so much character and depth.
