Is that what the finger crushing magnets were for?

Yup. The magnets are configured to repel. The turntable is magnetically levitated.
-
Yup. Less of that with gear drive instead of belt, but more rumble (?)
Belt vs direct drive is really purely personal preference. Platter rumble probably mostly comes from the platter bearing... Decoupling from the room mainly reduces footsteps and other actions in proximity of the record player (setting a drink down on the stand next to the tt, for example) as well as reducing the introduction of low-end feedback to the cart... but really something fancy like this is purely hipster "take my money" bullshit.

loved that movie
-
Yup. It was a favorite. The first time I saw it was probably 86. We were staying at a hotel and getting ready to go to a party. It was was playing on HBO (or something) and we all found it so compelling that we were late for the party. I would have been 18 at the time so the subject matter was quite topical.

Oh dear

Was kind of a prequel to The Big Chill
-
I didn't like the movie because it reminded me of the people I didn't like in high school. And this was a year after I graduated high school.
-
Plus I thought it was bullshit.
-
Well I liked it.

You got lucky.
I’ve seen them as big as a dime here
We leave a couple of 10mm magnets on the break room table when there are new hires.
You know, just to get them started.
