2040 is a long way away to be just fielding a 5th generation plane.

Its 6th gen, not sure if numbers are hammered down yet but its going to have to be a fair few to replace the Typhoon. We have around 130 in total and there will be a need for more.

Rules of New Superplane development:
1. Say it will dominate EVERYTHING in the sky for the next 50 years.
2. Say it will be operational in 20 years although you know it will take 30 years.
3. Say it will be so cheap there will be 350 of them in 20 years although you know the cost overruns will limit production to 35 of them.
4. Quote altitude, range and speed specifications that will miss the mark by 25% on the low side.
5. Collect your payments from the military industrial complex and retire.

Gotta admit that's a sweet gig.... a 30 year project... more than enough time to ride it out and retire, and let the FNG's coming in on the tail end responsible for delivering it.
