If you're going to navigate waterways it's the Intracoastal waterways. In the South it starts at the Southern end of Texas with canals that go along the bays from the border northward and start to develop well all the way down at Matagorda. You go from there with the industrial barges on the ICW through to Louisiana, then onto Alabama. Now you're on the Great Loop, 6000+ miles of waterways where you can go from Alabama, to New York, into Canada, through the Great Lakes to Chicago, then all the way back down to Louisiana or Alabama..
Normally the "loopers" spend winter in South Florida, "spring" up the East coast, summer in the Great Lakes, then "fall" back down towards Tennessee. You either take the industrial route that spits you out in New Orleans or the scenic route that spits you out at Mobile.
All done at about 8mph.

I'm actually hoping to be a looper when I retire.
-
My wife & I would like to sail it when the kids are out of the house.
-
I've spent a bit of time on the ICW in North Carolina. Always wanted to see where it went north and south from there.
-
And I should add, possibly living out of Florida on the coast - like Ft Myers or someshit.
I could see myself being a Looper, then going around the Keys and going around the Bahamas etc. etc. 30 footer sounds about right for me.

I did some sailing this summer in Canuckistan. It only cemented that what I have in mind down the road isn't just a pipe dream, I loved every second of it, and have been unable to get it off my mind.

~40 footer. Not too big to be unmanageable single handed, but not so small you bump your fucking head everytime you stand up.

A trawler
-
39' Trawler. Slip prices go up at 40'. If you want something big and beefy. The Great Harbor TT35 is designed to loop cheaply, easy maintenance on twin 115 outboards, have full sized appliances, and cruise in the mid 20s.

Yes, but it also means that you get to keep your man card.

A lot of Loopers with sailboats take the mast off for the journey - most waterways you motor as you don't have the space to tack. A sailboat is also more fuel efficient than a trawler on motor - slower, yes, but more fuel efficient.
A trawler would be epic don't get me wrong, but I love sailing - and it opens up ocean trips without the same kind of fuel worries - and you get redundant propulsion should things go wrong (and they always do).
-
A shoal draft trawler. Be reasonable. See it my way.

No right and no wrong boat to do it in really. You have to step the mast if you are going to go through Chiraq to the Gulf and doing a full loop. People have done it on jet skis. I've read some people's blogs that got crazy fuel efficiency just doing it in a sailboat with no mast like you mentioned. My concern with those isn't efficiency but power. Lacking the skills of a life long mariner, a semi-planing trawler with a 2' draft is my hot ticket to speeding away from danger, never getting the keel stuck, and really simple outboard maintenance just sitting on the stern.

Haha their were some youtubers with no skills that watched other nautical youtubers, sold everything, moved onto a sailboat for boat life, and promptly destroyed and sank it by grounding it on their way into Tampa Bay. Oops.

President Trump had them waiting in Mexico. With Mexico's agreement. Biden destroyed that and now he wants him to wait in Texas?
Fuck this guy
