Song Interpretations - Post a song, discuss the lyrics and what they mean to you

  • I had this idea for a thread to discuss song lyrics. I am not sure how it will work especially if we discuss multiple songs at the same time, but what the hell, lets give it a shot.

I will pick a classic that everybody likely knows: "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

    -----------------------------------------------------

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.

    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
    Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,

And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.

    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
    And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

    __________________________________________________-

    My interpretation:

In the First verse, the lady represents a naive women who believes she has it all figured out and she is buying her way into heaven by tithing her church. She believes in heaven she can have whatever she wants especially in a material sense and she is on the right path.

The Second verse I believe represents that sometimes she questions herself and her direction in life. a songbird hints that our entire perception about the world around us may be wrong.

Third Verse. I believe is about being able to sense and feel something that you can't see or touch that is out there in the etherial.

    Fourth Verse
If we all call the tune and follow the whisperings of our mind, "the Piper" will lead us to see things differently. The result being that we will leave way we knew behind and live in a new bettter existence.

The drums start in the song, as does this new vision of existence.

    Fifth Verse
A hedgerow is a bush, this is imagery depicting a bush shaking from the inside, but refers to wary feelings and thoughts in the mind. Don't be alarmed by these feelings and thoughts as they can be put into the proper perspective.
It's not too late to change the spiritual path that you are on. And it makes me wonder...

    Sixth Verse
Lady, you are filled with confusion.
Lady, your stairway lies on something that doesn't exist.

Then, a sudden strange and abrupt change in music. The solo seems to communicate its own particular message without words. This transition seems to represent the crossing over from innocence and falling into the truth.

    Final Verse
And as we wind on down the road
Our Shadows taller than our soul (Our shadows get taller as the sun is setting, so time passes)
There walks a Lady we all know of (The lady is the church)
Who shines bright light and wants to show (The church wants to sell you on how you can have it all)
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard (Listen!)
The truth will come to you at last (one's own sense of reason and truth)
When all is one and one is all (Everything is connected "etherial")
To be a rock and not to roll. (You are the rock of your own faith)

The last verse is a plea to look beyond the Lady (Church) to one's own sense of reason and morality to get to some higher place - "the tune will come to you at last" and you'll be the "rock" of your own faith, of your own reason,(as Jesus' claim to Peter) and not depend upon any other earthly entity to inform you of right and wrong.

So that is my interpretation. I wished I would have picked an easier song. This song was way more difficult to try and intrepret than I had imagined it would be.

    • Official Post

    That's pretty good, 69.

I never thought much about the meaning of each verse in that song but I thought that the overall gist of the song was that the devil is calling you to join him and that there are two paths you can take and it's not too late to change whichever one you're on.

It's interesting because a friend of mine and I were just talking about led Zeppelin and about how they are so great, but we each felt that there's some kind of spiritual weirdness going on with them and their music.

I thought that as a kid. I got that vibe from a lot of their songs but especially kashmere and stairway to heaven.

I know that Jimmy Page was heavily into the occult. I don't know, I just think there's some influence on their music that is spiritual like maybe satanic even. And I don't mean that in a nut job sense, like it's all satanic music. I just mean that to me it seems like they got help.

Like some of their melodies and music and stuff seems like it was so far ahead of its time. But it seems like there's a mystical part to it, at least for me.

    So it's interesting

  • The song is very deep and the lyrics contain many allegories. Yes, as you said, Jimmy Page was heavily into the occult, but I don't think the song was satanic although those who have spent their lives in organized religion would likely view it as satanic due to their indoctrination into the dogma and brainwashing within the church. I think the purpose of the song is to wake those people up who have been subjected to the atrocities of organized religeon and tell them they have a choice (there are two paths, not just one). If there is a devil in the song calling you to join him, the devil is the church calling you. The church is the devil because it manipulates Christianity and Jesus teachings.

Kashmere and Stairway to heaven are my two favorite songs by the band with Kashmere being #1. Spiritually both songs I believe are about connecting with Jesus Christ's true teachings and traversing the path towards connecting with universe and what is real instead of the church and the deception. The song essentially says you have a choice in life, make sure the path you are on the true path. The song isn't preachy though, but more of a wake up call I think. I would say the song resonates with many people on many levels but many people don't really understand why. I think this is because it resonates with their subconscious, but consciously they can not reason why.

At the time the song came out it was considered to be big "no no" to change tempo during a song. The song speeds up as it progresses which went against what was taught about music at the time.

I really appreciate your response and this discussion.

  • I totally get what you are saying. I really like what you wrote about the song.. The song could definitely be satanic to some people depending on a persons own perceptions.

Each line is deep. "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold" This line is about being sure you are right about something that isn't what you think it is. It glitters, it grabs your attention. You can go to heaven, have anything you want and live forever if you live your life like this. Have faith and someday that glittery thing will be real after you die and then you get that so called gold that you want. The lady is sure that the path she is on is correct and if she just does what she is told she will get the gold someday. "And she's buying a stairway to heaven." So she gives the church money (tithing) in order to get to heaven. She believes what the church tells her is the path to heaven. This could be any church by the way, Catholic, Jehovah Witness, Mormon, etc. They all operate in that way although Jehovah Witness does to a lesser extent of those 3. You must go to church regularly to get to heaven and to go to church regularly you must pay money eventually.

  • The song could also be perceived to be Satanic by someone calling out the Churches for being so evil. Satanic in what the church does to their followers with all the deception. To do what the church does with all the decepetion is considered morally wrong by some and goes against Jesus Christ and Christian principles in their purest form. Jesus had something to say about false prophets.

I hope I am not offending anyone by speaking freely.

  • I'm not 'splainin...

She'll always get you when your guard is down

Pick you up and then drag you round

And everybody knows you'll be found

    Following a trail of tears

She keeps her heart all locked in chains

You'll never have a chanse to love again

But you won't be the first my friend

You're following a trail of tears

A trail of teardrops always fall

'Cause girls like that don't care at all

She just wants to see you crawl

Crawling through the trail of tears

You'll tell her that you need her so

But she'll just laugh and then you'll know

That you've got a lifetime left to go

    Following a trail of tears

A trail of teardrops always fall

'Cause girls like that don't care at all

She just wants to see you crawl

Crawling through the trail of tears

You're asking me how I can tell

But it's a story that I know well

'Cause I've been walked all over hell

    Following a trail of tears

A trail of teardrops always fall

'Cause girls like that don't care at all

She just wants to see you crawl

Crawling through the trail of tears

A trail of teardrops always fall

'Cause girls like that don't care at all

She just wants to see you crawl

Crawling through the trail of tears

Crawling through a trail of tears

Crawling through a trail of tears

  • The world was on fire and no one could save me but you

It's strange what desire will make foolish people do

I never dreamed that I'd meet somebody like you

And I never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you

No, I don't want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

No, I don't want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

With you, with you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

What a wicked game to play to make me feel this way

What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you

What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way

What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you

And I don't wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

No, I don't wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

    With you

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you

It's strange what desire will make foolish people do

I never dreamed that I'd love somebody like you

And I never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you

No, I don't wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

No, I don't wanna fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

With you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

With you (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

No, I... (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

(This girl is only gonna break your heart)

    Nobody loves no one

  • In this version of the song "Wicked Game" lyrics are posted above, the line (this girl is only gonna break your heart ) is replaced with (this world is only gonna break your heart).

  • Stairway to Heaven

This version of the song features Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, along with Jason Bonham (the late John Bonham's son) on drums, playing Stairway to Heaven as a tribute for Led Zeppelin on Dec. 2, 2012 at Kennedy Center.

    • Official Post

Robert Plant said the words and melody of Stairway came to him in a stream on consciousness. Take that for whatever it's worth...

I think that it's about following the devil. Maybe not every verse, but that's my take.

The piper's calling you to join him

    A new day will dawn

    Two paths to choose

I just get a supernatural vibe/undercurrent/feeling from that song. Like it came from somewhere else.

  • Would you be willing to share how it is about following the devil? Which lines and how? I think I already said I thought it was about not following the devil, so I would really like to hear your perspective.

I know I could be wrong in my perception of the song. I am very averse to anyone or anythng that promotes following something that is evil with a D in front of it.
