Mean and very tough. They don't quit. Badgers are pissed off all the time; it's their standard attitude.
Badger holes are dangerous to cattle and horses. Most people want them out of the pastures. I am guessing he initially thought he'd haul it off in the big red bucket but quickly realize that wasn't near big enough.
That is the Great Plains version of having a tiger by the tail. Soon as you let it go, it wants a piece of you and has the teeth and claws to get one.
I've seen several that were initially hit with shotgun and even centerfire rifle that kept crawling towards the shooter with revenge on their minds.
